Getting Started

No account is needed. Folio works completely offline from the moment you download it. Your entries are stored privately on your device. If you use iCloud, your journal automatically syncs across your Apple devices using your existing Apple ID — no separate account required.

Tap the amber + New Entry button at the bottom right of the main screen. Add a title (optional), write your entry, choose your mood, and tap Save. That's it!

When writing or editing an entry, tap the Improve with AI button at the bottom of the screen. The AI will suggest improvements to your writing — fixing grammar, improving clarity, or expanding your thoughts.

Your original is always preserved. You'll see both versions side by side and can choose to accept or reject the AI's suggestions. The AI never overwrites your original without your permission.

Privacy & Security

Your journal entries are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. If you have iCloud enabled, they are also backed up to your personal iCloud private database — which only you can access. We have no access to your data.

No. Your entries are stored in your personal iCloud private container, which is technically inaccessible to us. We have no servers that store your journal content. The only time your text leaves your device is when you use the AI writing feature, which sends your text directly to Anthropic's API — it is not stored or logged by us.

Go to the Settings tab in Folio, then find the Privacy & Security section. Toggle on Face ID Lock (or Touch ID on older devices). Folio will lock automatically whenever you leave the app.

Subscription & Billing

The free version includes: unlimited journal entries, mood tracking, tags, full-text search, Face ID lock, daily reminders, 3 AI writing improvements per month, and up to 5 photo attachments.

Folio Premium ($2.99/month or $24.99/year) includes everything in the free version plus: unlimited AI writing improvements, unlimited photo attachments, visual photo search powered by AI, PDF export for individual entries, and full JSON and Markdown export of your entire journal.

Subscriptions are managed through Apple. To cancel:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Find Folio and tap Cancel Subscription

Your Premium access will continue until the end of the current billing period.

Download Folio on your new device and sign in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase Premium. Your subscription will be automatically detected. If it doesn't restore automatically, go to Settings in Folio and tap Restore Purchases.

Data & Export

Go to Settings → Export. Premium users can export their entire journal as JSON or Markdown. To export a single entry as PDF, open the entry, tap the ... menu in the top right, and tap Export as PDF.

If you delete the app, local data on your device will be removed. However, if you have iCloud enabled, your entries are preserved in your iCloud account and will restore automatically when you reinstall Folio and sign in with the same Apple ID.

We recommend exporting your journal as a backup before deleting the app just to be safe.

When you attach a photo to a journal entry, Folio uses AI to automatically generate a text description of what's in the photo. This description is saved privately with your entry. When you search, Folio searches these descriptions — so searching "beach" or "sunset" will find entries with matching photos even if you never wrote those words.

This feature requires an active internet connection when first attaching the photo. The description is generated once and stored locally — no ongoing connection required for searching.

Troubleshooting

AI features require an active internet connection. Please check that you're connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data. If the problem persists, try force-closing Folio and reopening it. If you're on the free plan, check that you haven't used your 3 monthly AI improvements — usage resets on the first of each month.

Make sure both devices are signed into the same Apple ID and that iCloud is enabled. You can check this in your iPhone's Settings → Your Name → iCloud. Sync may take a few minutes after making changes. If sync still isn't working, try toggling iCloud off and back on in your device settings.

Folio uses your device's built-in Face ID or Touch ID — the same one you use to unlock your iPhone. If Face ID fails several times, iOS will offer a passcode fallback. Enter your iPhone's passcode to unlock Folio. If you've forgotten your iPhone passcode, you'll need to restore your device through Apple — this is an Apple security feature we cannot override.
